Botox Q & A

How does BOTOX work?

BOTOX works by inhibiting the messaging system between the brain and specific muscles of the face. These messages tell the muscles when to contract in response to certain facial expressions like smiling or frowning. When the messages are blocked, the muscles aren't “told” to contract, which means wrinkles don't form.

What kinds of wrinkles can BOTOX treat?

BOTOX only works on so-called dynamic wrinkles, lines and creases that form when the facial muscles contract and pull on skin tissue. These wrinkles include crow's feet (“squint” lines by the corners of your eyes), horizontal forehead lines (rhytids) and vertical frown lines between your eyebrows (glabellar lines). BOTOX does not work to correct wrinkling that occurs as a result of skin laxity (static wrinkles).

What is the BOTOX procedure like?

After a careful evaluation of your skin, specific injection points will be identified, depending on where treatment is being performed. BOTOX is injected using a very fine needle, and depending on the area being treated, several injections may be needed to get the best effect. The entire procedure takes just a few minutes, and most patients experience very minor discomfort or none at all. After treatment, there may be some temporary minor swelling or redness that will quickly resolve.

When will I notice results?

You'll begin to see results a few days after treatment with improvement continuing for several weeks.

How often will I need a touch-up?

In most cases, re-injections every four to six months will enable you to maintain your effects. Many people find that after several injections, lines and wrinkles become less severe, so touch-ups may not be needed quite as often.

Does insurance cover BOTOX injections?

No, BOTOX for wrinkle correction is considered a cosmetic procedure and it is not covered by medical insurance.
