What are fillers?

Cosmetic (or dermal) fillers are materials that can be injected under the skin to help fill in wrinkles, correct some scars and acne damage, add volume to sagging skin, and even help promote the development of collagen and elastin, the cornerstones of youthful-looking skin. Fillers can also be used to increase the volume or “plumpness” of lips. Many fillers are composed of natural materials like hyaluronic acid which helps the skin retain moisture and look plumper and less lax. The consistency of different fillers can also vary, helping them to be used in a wider range of applications, from deep creases to fine lines like the ones that occur around the lips.

What is the filler procedure like?

Before any filler is injected, your doctor will discuss your concerns and objectives and perform a complete evaluation of your skin so the ideal filler can be used. Once the treatment areas are identified, the procedure begins by cleansing the areas and applying a topical numbing agent. The filler material will be carefully injected to ensure even distribution. In some areas, multiple injections sites may be needed to ensure the filler “spreads out” throughout the treatment zone. Most treatments can be completed in well under 30 minutes, and you can resume your regular activities immediately afterward. There may be some slight swelling or redness at the injection sites which will resolve soon afterward.
